American education system is not like that of many other countries. Despite the United States federal government contributing 10 percent to the national education budget, education is primarily the responsibility of state and local affairs. For instance in Minnesota, almost 80 percent of the public education funds comes from the state sources. About 17 percent comes from the local sources. The other 5 percent comes from the federal government.

Every state has its own departments of education and laws that regulate finances, the hiring of school workforce, student attendance, and curriculum.  States also establish the number of years of essential education. In most states, education is essential from five or six to sixteen. But in some states, teens have to stay in school until the age 18.
